THE GAME 

"Curses" is a side view game, rogue like, turn by turn game, made on Godot 4.5.1. You play a team of 4 heroes who try to find the cause and a way to cure Corruption. But some adepts of this one will not let you do it

FEATURES 

The fight is not done turn by turn, we do not directly attack enemies, but we curse them, these curses are played out in succession once you activate them with the attacks made for. Depending on the order in which you put them on the enemies, it’s the order in which they will be played, their damage, their healing, their effects.

ART 

I would have liked the player to feel the weight of the world, that it’s heavy and that he feels that these actions have consequences, that he feels that he is the kind hero of the prophecy who must eliminate the villains. With a very “dirty” artistic direction, “bland”, gore. A very dark world where the player brings light. But I didn’t have time to finish the artistic direction, the sound effects, the lights. So the visual assets are assets retrieved from itch.io


THE PROJECT

This game is a 10-week end-of-year Godot 2D project made during the first year of the Game Design & Development programme at Creative Seeds.

We were in a workshop where we had to choose between four themes: Fragile, Instability, Dichotomy, Chain reaction. I chose Chain Reaction because I wanted to create a game where the player had to think about what they have to do, in which order, and create satisfaction with activating all effects.

I looked for references to build on such as Darkest Dungeon, Octopath Traveler, Slay the Spire; and others that I studied to understand how a turn-based game is fun and friendly to play.

The turn-based combat system and enemy AI were the biggest problems, the rest were mostly small mistakes.

For turn-by-turn, I created a method where all the enemies play their turn according to given states that define the order. When all the characters in the fight have finished playing, we recalculate the stats of all the characters in the fight and replay them.

I wanted something too elaborate, so I wasted time. But in the end, it’s simple. Each attack has conditions and/or a basic defined score that can increase or decrease. The attack with the highest score plays. Same for the target, each of the targets has a score that depends on the stats, HP, or corruption the Hero has.
